Many terms and acronyms are specific to college life and college sports. In this series of blog posts, we will cover some of the most common spoken and important college student-athlete vocabulary terms that are good to know as a prospect before you go to college, and as a parent who is overwhelmed with all of the new information regarding your child’s next step in higher education and athletic career.
Freshman
A student in the first year of their undergraduate education in a four-year institution.
Sophomore
A student in the second year of their undergraduate education in a four-year institution.
Junior
A student in the third year of their undergraduate education in a four-year institution.
Senior
A student in the fourth/last year of their undergraduate education in a four-year institution.
International Student
A student who does not have American citizenship.
GPA
Grade Point Average is the measure of a studentβs academic performance used by American institutions.
Conference
A group of colleges or universities that compete against each other in sports.
Conference Tournament
Postseason tournament in which teams from a conference compete for a championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA National Tournament.
National Tournament
A knockout system tournament where college teams from across the country compete to determine the national champions. Teams qualify by doing well in their regular season or by winning their conference tournaments.
Off-Season
The period when a sport is referred to as not in season is the period when teams do not participate in official matches. Typically that period is used for development training and conditioning.
