Can International Student-Athletes Work on Campus? What You Need to Know!

Balancing athletics, academics, and life in a new country is no small feat. If you’re an international student-athlete in the U.S., you might be wondering: Can I work on campus to support myself? The answer is yes, but with important rules and limitations you need to know.

The Ludius Student-Athletes team has been in those shoes. We’ve navigated the same visa rules, time crunches, and job searches. Therefore, we’re here to help you succeed while avoiding the pitfalls.

The Basics for On-Campus Work

Most international student-athletes in the U.S. hold an F-1 visa. This visa allows you to work on campus, but only under specific conditions:

🕑 Up to 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters

🕓 Up to 40 hours per week during official school breaks

What Counts as “On-Campus Employment”?

On-campus employment generally includes:

🏟️ Jobs paid by university departments
Example: Library, Athletic Department

Roles serving students on campus, even if run by contractors
Example: Coffee shop barista

Steps to Success

1️⃣ Find the Right Job

Look for positions that fit your daily schedule. Be upfront about your commitments! Most campus employers are used to working with student-athletes.

2️⃣ Prepare Your Documentation

Once you’ve found a job you’re interested in, gather the necessary documentation to complete your application. This may include:

  • I-20 Form: Issued by your school verifying your F-1 visa status
  • Proof of Enrollment
  • Social Security Number or application receipt

✅ Comply with F-1 Work Regulations

Once you’re hired, it’s important to maintain compliance with the F-1 visa work regulations:

  • Work Hours
  • Work Location
  • Keep your grades and athletic eligibility in good standing

⚠️ Failing to stay compliant can jeopardize your visa status.

Balancing work, sports, and studies is tough, but with the right knowledge and support, you can thrive. Do you have questions? Reach out to Ludius Student-Athletes! We’ve been there, and we’re ready to help you succeed!
