In this volume of “College Athlete Vocabulary”, we will expand on some definitions/terms that are related to athletic and academic honors given to student-athletes
Walk-on
A student-athlete who makes the roster of a varsity college team without being recruited or offered a scholarship by the coach. Usually, this is achieved after spending some time training or even competing with a team on a trial basis.
Endorsement
An agreement between a student-athlete and a company to promote or advertise a product or service.
Verbal Commitment
A non-binding agreement between a student-athlete and a college, indicating the intention to attend and play for that college.
Defensive Player of the Week/Season
An award that recognizes a college athlete, usually in team sports like soccer, football, or basketball, who has performed exceptionally well in a defensive position during that week’s games. The award highlights the best defensive performance among all college players in a conference or region for that particular period.
Offensive Player of the Week
An award that recognizes a college athlete, usually in team sports like soccer, football, or basketball, who has performed exceptionally well in an offensive position during that week’s games. The award highlights the best offensive performance among all college players in a conference or region for that particular period.
All-Conference
A student-athlete who receives recognition for their performance within their conference for the entire season from the conference he/she competes in. Coaches involved in the particular conference have the right to vote on these awards.
All-Region
A student-athlete who receives recognition for their performance within their conference for the entire season from the region he/she competes in. Coaches involved in the particular region have the right to vote on these awards.
All-American
An outstanding student-athlete who receives recognition for their performance by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
All-Academic
An honor for student-athletes who excel academically within their conference/region.
Deanβs List
An academic achievement where a student-athlete earns a high GPA (usually 3.5 or above) during a specific semester.
